Column: Manufactured achievements mean nothing

On Christmas Day, Katie Hnida made college football history. After the New Mexico Lobos scored on an interception return to take a 6-3 lead in the Las Vegas Bowl, Hnida strode onto the field, waited for the snap, and attempted the extra point. With a swing of her leg, Hnida became engraved in the record books as the first female to play Division I-A college football.











Column: Late nights with the postseason

This year's World Series was memorable for many reasons: the Angels captured their first championship, Barry Bonds finally proved that he can play well in the postseason and a rookie became the first Game 7 winner since Babe Adams accomplished the feat in 1909. To make a long story short, this World Series--indeed this postseason--will be remembered simply for the games that refused to end.




Column: The recruiting trail

The news came Monday afternoon: Houston native Ndudi Ebi, one of the top high school senior basketball players in the nation and one of Duke's prime recruits, would be announcing his college decision Tuesday morning. The impending decision by Ebi--who had narrowed his college choices to Duke, Arizona, Texas and Houston--kicked college basketball journalists in three states into high gear.



Coaches poll: worthless

On Jan. 17, the Washington Redskins named Steve Spurrier their new head coach, setting off a wave of discussion across the football world. Those with ties to Spurrier's former team, the Florida Gators, certainly made their voices heard. But lost in the hype was the impact that the hiring had on a college football program that was in the midst of a 23-game losing streak.
