In March, they struggled to string together consistency near the bottom of the conference. And in February, no one had any expectations for an inexperienced Duke team with plenty of question marks.

On Feb. 28 when Duke took down then-No. 20 Eastern Carolina 9-0, it was a shock to many who predicted the Blue Devils to finish near the bottom of the ACC. However, head coach Chris Pollard said it was a sign that “we can play with anybody in the country.” Now, with its third-straight ranked series win, this time against No. 11 Virginia, No. 16 Duke has established itself as not just capable, but ready to compete for an ACC title.

After more than two weeks of return and departure announcements by Duke’s star freshmen and junior captain Jeremy Roach, the final domino fell Tuesday morning with the news that ACC Rookie of the Year Kyle Filipowski will return for his sophomore season. Shortly after, five-star prospect and top-ranked Mackenzie Mgbako announced his decommitment, adding another foil to the developing roster puzzle for head coach Jon Scheyer in year two.

However, even after two days of heavy rain postponed Duke’s weekend series against Virginia Tech and canceled a game Saturday, both sides brought pitchers firing on all cylinders.



Duke baseball falls short of series victory in rubber match at North Carolina

Last season, when the Blue Devils played North Carolina, they split the first two games of the series before falling in the rubber match. As the saying goes, history repeats itself. Just over a year later, this time in a road series at Chapel Hill, Duke showed resilience in its Friday victory but ultimately dropped the final game and the series Saturday.
