It's a rare and beautiful thing when the words of an artist expressed through song so accurately reflect the feelings of the common listener. In a music industry that is all too often unoriginal and uninspired, thank God for R&B, a safe haven for those who still tell it like it is. Fortunately, there will always be the precious few who preach on about the uncertainties of growing up poor, the difficulties of losing a love and the undeniable pain of menstrual cramps and bloating....


Closer Than You Think

Better than Ezra is back--and completely schizophrenic. After the loss of their label (Elektra) and a three-year hiatus from the world of alternative rock, the New Orleans trio has re-emerged with both guns blazing, though one is shooting blanks. Closer, their newest effort, showcases flashes of musical brilliance, sometimes sidetracked by the stumbling block of misplaced, uninspired pop. From the very good to the very bad, the band follows numerous dazzling hits with several dismal misses, a fact that makes Better than Ezra as likable as they are frustrating.



Addictive duo

Fifteen years ago, Jane's Addiction were the ultimate rock stars. Born out of the mid-80s post-punk scene in L.A., their 1987 eponymous debut and its 1988 follow-up, Nothing's Shocking, paved the way for their superstar status. In 1990, Ritual de lo Habitual earned them commercial success and secured their place at the dinner table of great rock musicians.
