When two international freshmen found themselves unable to go home for the holidays, they began to plan a trip to the city of Fayetteville, N.C.—about 90 miles away. An error in planning, however, left Cassie Yuan and Florence Tesha over 1,000 miles away in Fayetteville, Ark. A run in with the local media gave way to an instant status of town celebrities for the two girls, who ended up enjoying their holiday by being welcomed by their new midwestern friends. The Chronicle’s Carleigh Stiehm sat down with Yuan to discuss her winter adventure.

Stefani Jones: Some of DSG's most important work this semester has been reactive to concerns with construction and campus changes. With respect to dining changes, we successfully extended the hours at the refectory, started a lunchtime food trucks program, and expanded the number of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options on campus. We also worked on increasing communication of dining and construction changes, with an open house, West Union updates video and a big push on social media. We have a record number of students using Fix My Campus, and we've been responding quicker and more effectively to a lot of student concerns. Lastly, after the unexpected cancellation of the Duke Bikes program, DSG led the effort to bring a new bike-sharing program to campus, which we expect to be implemented next semester.

Since receiving its status as a recognized student group at the Sept. 25 meeting of Duke Student Government, the leaders of the Black Men’s Union have been working to solidify their place as leaders on campus. President of external affairs Bradford Ellison, a sophomore, and co-presidents of internal affairs Marcus Montano, a sophomore, and Kwesi Hinson, a junior, hope the organization will serve as a resource to the young black men of the Duke community.
