Last season, Duke put up one of its best performances of the season in Chestnut Hill, Mass., holding Boston College to 27 points. This year, the Eagles put together a far superior performance, but the end result was the same.

Take of the week: Duke men's basketball poised for top-end ACC campaign after up-and-down nonconference start

(12/26/23 4:24pm)

Just two weeks ago, it seemed like Duke men’s basketball’s season may be defined by intense underperformance — a-la 2022-23 North Carolina, who similarly began highly ranked before enduring an early slide. With star sophomore point guard Tyrese Proctor suffering an ankle injury and the Blue Devils sitting at 5-3, the outlook was bleak. Fast forward to the week of Christmas, where Duke knocked off then-No. 10 Baylor at Madison Square Garden to improve to 8-3, and it seems like Duke has regained the form needed to win the ACC.

After back-to-back road losses at unranked Arkansas and Georgia Tech, No. 21 Duke’s season seemed to be teetering on the edge early, with no clear identity and a stagnant offense being just two of the issues facing head coach Jon Scheyer’s squad. But while the job is certainly nowhere close to finished, Tuesday night’s 89-68 win against Hofstra showed Blue Devil fans the true potential of their team.

Duke football to play in the Birmingham Bowl Dec. 23 against Troy

(12/03/23 8:47pm)

Editor's note: This article was published before Duke's bowl announcement was made official, mistakenly asserting that numerous Sunday reports were confirmation of its placement. Previous versions of this article, based on an Action Network report, a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, from the Big 12 and advertisements on the Gasparilla Bowl website, incorrectly reported that Duke would play in the Gasparilla Bowl against UCF. The Chronicle regrets the error.

For the second straight year, Duke football is going bowling. After starting 4-0, the Blue Devils cooled off, but were still talented enough to become bowl eligible at 7-5, and they now await their bowl placement Sunday. Duke is out of consideration for the Orange Bowl, but it is eligible for a host of other games, as likely the fifth or sixth best ACC team according to the bowl committee.
