Sir Charles will be sorely missed in the `uncivilized' NBA

(04/19/00 4:00am)

In the early 1980s, the employees of the Pizza Hut located in Auburn, Ala. were given a few things to memorize. The correct temperature for the oven, the prices for each topping. But most importantly, they learned that if someone called and simply said, "This is Charles," three large supreme pizzas should be sent immediately to the dorm room of Auburn's star forward.

To Bowl or not to Bowl? That is the championship question

(12/01/99 9:00am)

December is here and it is time for the annual slew of jokes at the expense of the BCS. Not a computer geek will be spared as sportswriters mock the scientists who devised the equation. But it won't just be the geeks. The witty scribe will be sure to take shots at meaningless bowl games with names like the Insight.com Bowl. But mock it all you like, the Poulan Weedeater Bowls of this world offer hope. I was once one of the cynics. I never understood why there is no college football playoff, and I'll admit, I still don't understand the BCS rankings. But I do understand that dozens of teams across the nation have no realistic shot of ever making a 16-team NCAA football playoff. And while the Florida States of the world freely mock the meeker postseason contests, what Duke fan or player wouldn't leap at the chance to star in the Mobile Alabama Bowl? The Blue Devils, and dozens of teams like them, have no realistic shot of making a 16-team playoff. To exclude them from postseason aspirations before the season begins is not the solution. A 16-team playoff would feature 15 games and would be so large it would squeeze out all the lesser bowls. Duke entered this season with realistic aspirations of getting to a bowl game, but would the Blue Devils bother dreaming of a top-16 finish? The BCS system certainly isn't perfect, and over the next several years I'm sure it will be tweaked plenty. But the bowl system as it stands now allows everyone to dream big. But this is not just about the Dukes and the Wake Forests. The elimination of the BCS also concerns the Florida States and the Floridas. One of the beauties of college football is that it truly is the only sport where every game matters: one loss and you're done. Some claim that it's unfair that a Week 1 loss ends national title hopes. But if you ask me, that's why it's fun to tune in during Week 1. NCAA football's regular season won't ever reach the meaninglessness of, say, the NBA regular season, but if you create a playoff in college football, it certainly takes away some of the game's edge. Florida-Florida State is a tremendous rivalry between two of the nation's best teams. I'm not going to suggest that a playoff would ruin the rivalry, but one of the series' best attributes is that every year, one of the two can ruin the title hopes of the other. The game means a lot less if both teams advance to the playoffs no matter what. Playoffs offer fans excitement and thrills, but in college football, the regular season already offers that. So keep football the way it is-exciting for everyone, not just the big boys.
