Since the publication of Michael Lewis' superb Moneyball, which, among other things, glorified sabermetrics, sports writers have channeled their inner math geeks. (Hey, if Nate Silver can call an election with statistics, it should be good enough for college basketball, too.) Sports Illustrated's Luke Winn has a history of evaluating teams based on certain relevant statistical categories, and today, he highlighted "defensive efficiency, " the number of points a team allows per 100 possessions, as common cornerstones of title contenders.

Former Duke head coach Ted Roof is proving to be a popular commodity as a defensive coordinator.

Again, Duke Blue Planet's compilation of the top five plays from Duke's win over Virginia Tech Sunday. The only beef we have is we would move Jon Scheyer's give-and-go layup from Kyle Singler to the No. 2 spot over Gerald Henderson's circus shot. Sure, Henderson's acrobatics look nice (even if it was oddly reminiscent of a play against Loyola), but Scheyer's layup was an example of absolutely gorgeous basketball. Same with the No. 1 play, which was... well, watch the video to find out.

Another upset no one saw coming, at least not before yesterday: Duke has jumped over North Carolina in the polls.

Abby Waner might be the first women's basketball player to be second on her college team in scoring to be featured in ESPN The Magazine's humorous interview on its penultimate page. Of course, it probably helped that Waner interned at the Worldwide Leader this summer.

The (Raleigh) News & Observer is reporting Saturday that Duke's basketball program began an NCAA self-report to turn in associate head coach Chris Collins' attendance at a high school game during a "dead" recruiting period Friday. Collins was on hand to watch games featuring Ravenscroft High School and Word of God Christian Academy, with Duke commit Ryan Kelly and Duke recruit John Wall, respectively.

The (Durham) Herald Sun may lag behind The (Raleigh) News & Observer, but Durham's daily beat Raleigh's rag to opining about Duke's extending David Cutcliffe's contract through 2015.The Herald Sun's editorial board wholeheartedly endorsed the move in an editorial today, writing that the extension is "hard to challenge" given the program's obvious improvement.

Duke Blue Planet has posted its top 5 plays from Duke's Saturday win over Xavier. One point of contention: Where is Jon Scheyer's no-look pass to Dave McClure for a dunk to end the half? It was more than an excellent look from Scheyer--it had symbolic value, as it put an exclamation point (or two) on the Blue Devils' best half of the season.

Duke head coach David Cutcliffe won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

After he scored 20 points in a half at Madison Square Garden Nov. 20, Gerald Henderson told me he doesn't care for NBA rims. It was something of a surprise, given his performance that night. Looks like Henderson isn't struggling so much in NBA arenas anymore, not after his 19-point outburst Saturday.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- It wasn't supposed to be this easy for Duke.

DUKE 82-64, FINAL: Duke closes out its best win of the season in which it played its best basketball of the season. Chris Collins raises his fist, and the Duke bench is all smiles. Miller stops for an extended second to congratulate Scheyer and Henderson, who combine for 42 points in the win, and the Musketeers leave the floor with their first loss of the season. Krzyzewski has an extra hop in his step as he jogs off, McClure puts his arm around Smith, Henderson points to Doug Collins in the front row, and this one's a wrap. Back after postgame.

Over at the Herald Sun, Duke beat writer Bryan Strickland provides an informative account of what exactly happened when Mike Krzyzewski found himself in a minor car accident last week. Turns out, the word "minor" may have been an understatement: Trying to make a U-turn, Krzyzewski flipped his car and was suspended upside down in a ditch. Strapped in by a seatbelt, he pulled out his cell phone, called his wife, Mickie, and she helped him out of his car.
