In modern music, genre names are tossed around so casually that they can pigeonhole any band, and the all-inclusive "indie rock" has become one of the most meaningless phrases in the industry. However, some bands have been able to avoid categorization. Les Savy Fav is a prime example.

Back in the summer of 1997, three bright-eyed teenagers dominated the airwaves with the infectious pop song "MMMBop." Hanson has since put out three more albums, created their own record label, 3CG, and started their own charity project to help bring shoes to Africa. Currently, the trio is touring around the country playing music from 2007's The Walk. Taylor Hanson recently took a break from the band's busy schedule to talk to recess' Andrew Hibbard.

If bands' names were accurate descriptors for their sound, the Soulless Dogs' new record Loose Cannonry would be a terribly boring affair. Thankfully, this campus blues/gospel/jazz/rock/funk quartet has more soul than it knows what to do with.

Dan Bejar built his name as Destroyer but has become equally well known for his involvement in indie supergroups the New Pornographers and Swan Lake. He has kept Destroyer going over the years and recently released Trouble in Dreams. Bejar is now embarking on a tour to promote his new album. recess' Andrew Hibbard recently spoke to Bejar via e-mail about his lengthy career, his side projects and his upcoming tour.

It could be said that Michael Moore has done a lot for the documentary. He's certainly not objective, but he has made it a more accessible genre. Still, his style of filmmaking is definitely not the norm.

Any self-proclaimed indie hipster should be listening to Dan Bejar at least once a week. Not only does his resume include supergroups Swan Lake and the New Pornographers, Bejar is easily one of the most stupefying songwriters out there-a sure sign of his indie credibility.

Small Town Records, a subsidiary of the Duke University Union, will hold its first annual CD release party today at Alivia's. The event will feature performances by Small Town rock bands Smooch and the Big Hug and Stella by Starlight and hip-hop artist Mike Posner. In addition to the bands, Small Town Records will be giving away free T-shirts and compilation CDs and have an open bar.

Doris Duke holds an important place in the Duke legacy, but few know about the relationship she had with her butler. On Feb. 9, HBO will premiere a new somewhat-based-on-a-true-story film called Bernard and Doris about the heiress. Starring Susan Sarandon as Doris and Ralph Fiennes as butler Bernard Lafferty, the film explores the relationship between the two and is directed by seasoned actor/producer/director Bob Balaban. The wedding and the romantic comedy were born to be together. From Four Weddings and a Funeral to The Wedding Date, they run the gamut from enjoyably cutesy to painfully bad. Thankfully, 27 Dresses falls among the former.
