No. 14 Duke concluded its 2023-24 regular season by splitting a pair of away matches against ranked ACC opponents this past weekend. The Blue Devils started off strong Friday with a dominant 4-1 victory against No. 7 Wake Forest, before falling to No. 16 N.C. State by a score of 4-2 Sunday. The loss to the Demon Deacons snapped a six-match winning streak for head coach Ramsey Smith’s squad, who finished their regular season with a strong 17-8 overall record and 9-3 in ACC play.

Duke’s losing streak continued Friday as the team fell to archrival North Carolina by a score of 41-9. The loss meant the Blue Devils finished the regular season with a 4-13 record and without a win in five conference meets. Duke has failed to take a single match in the ACC for six consecutive seasons, stretching back to a 19-16 victory against Virginia in 2018.

Duke’s disappointing season continued Sunday against No. 8 N.C. State in Cameron Indoor Stadium, as the Blue Devils fell by a score of 36-9. The contest began with a celebration of Duke’s six senior wrestlers, and ended in a thoroughly dominant Wolfpack victory. The Blue Devils’ defeat was the team’s seventh in a row, and 31st consecutive in ACC play across the past six years.

Duke continued its impressive start to the new season with back-to-back 4-0 wins against No. 23 N.C. State and Middle Tennessee during the ITA Kickoff Weekend. With these dominant victories, the Blue Devils moved on to the National Team Indoor Champions in New York for the first time since 2018.

After a historic 22-7 season featuring a trip to both the ACC championship and the Sweet 16 — losing to eventual national champion Virginia in both — Duke is primed for another deep postseason run. The eighth-ranked team by ITA has the majority of its squad returning, including the entire starting singles lineup. The group is led by redshirt senior Garrett Johns, the 2023 singles All-American who is returning after playing professionally in the fall. Sophomore Pedro Rodenas is coming off an impeccable freshman season, winning 33 times during the course of the year and recording an 11-1 ACC record. Rodenas and Johns also represent the No. 1 doubles tandem for the Blue Devils.

Duke began the new year traveling down to Chattanooga, Tenn., to compete in the 2024 Southern Scuffle. Throughout the two-day tournament, 12 Blue Devils wrestled against opponents from 20 different schools, including No. 18 Stanford, No. 19 Oklahoma and No. 22 Indiana.

As most students rushed home for the holidays, hoping to enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation, Duke traveled to Charlotte Tuesday for a big doubleheader against The Citadel and Queens. The matchup yielded mixed results for the Blue Devils. On the one hand, the team scored only three individual victories against the Bulldogs, falling in the opening encounter by a score of 23-9. However, in the afternoon, Duke bounced back emphatically, trouncing the Royals in a dominant 47-0 victory.

Duke had a tournament to forget at the 2023 Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, finishing ninth overall out of the 10 teams competing. After earning its first two wins of the season against Cleveland State and Kent State, the team struggled to replicate last week’s strong showing during Sunday’s tournament. Despite fielding 15 wrestlers across 10 different weight classes, only three Blue Devils won their opening-round matchups, while just two placed in the top five of their respective weight classes. 



Duke wrestling picks up first 2 wins of season against Cleveland State, Kent State, loses to West Virginia

After a disastrous opening weekend in which Duke only won two of 30 matches against Rutgers, Cal Poly and Stanford, the Blue Devils bounced back in a major way during their triple-header in Morgantown, W. Va., Sunday. Despite falling to West Virginia 40-6, Duke earned its first two wins of the season through a 19-16 defeat of Cleveland State and 24-17 victory against Kent State.
