Senior Column: The magic 8 ball reveals what's special
What a long, strange trip it's been. College, that is. Jerry Garcia certainly said it best, but I still have one question left for his eternal spirit. What's going to happen next?

RALEIGH -- Seton Hall point guard Andre Barrett may have been celebrating after his team's 80-76 victory over Arizona Thursday night, but for the following 36 hours the only thing on his mind will be a deep shade of blue. Coach Mike Krzyzewski's No. 1 seeded Blue Devils (28-5) dismantled No. 16 seed Alabama State 96-61 in their first round game, prompting a showdown between the Pirates (21-9) and Duke 1 p.m. Saturday at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C.
RALEIGH -- Are Chris Duhon's ribs okay? Can J.J. still hit a jumpshot?

Someone has to play giant-killer, right? The Alabama State Hornets (16-14) will be rolling plenty of tape this week from the infamous 1989 matchup between No. 16 seed Princeton and the top-seed Georgetown. In that contest, the Hoyas squeaked by with a 50-49 victory and avoided the biggest upset in NCAA tournament history. Head coach Mike Krzyzewski's Duke Blue Devils (27-5) have no intention of heading into the history books with the dubious label of losing to the No. 16 seed Hornets Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at the RBC Center in Raleigh.
WINSTON-SALEM -- Heart --yes it is in your chest, but more importantly it is represented in your demeanor. Coach Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devils may have lost two straight conference games, but they displayed more passion for the game Wednesday night than they have all season.
Traveling from one Big Four opponent's den to another has been Duke's rigorous itinerary this week. Fresh off its first conference loss at the hands of Tobacco Road-foe N.C. State, the Blue Devils (21-2, 10-1 in the ACC) are facing a short trip down I-40 for a date with the rejuvenated No. 15 Wake Forest Demon Deacons (15-6, 5-5) at Lawrence-Joel Coliseum Wednesday night.
For the critics who have all but handed Duke the ACC regular season championship trophy, there happens to be a second-place contender that would like to voice its' opinion.
The Thrill in Chapel Hill this Thursday will be a date with the Devil from the other side of town, as Tobacco Road's fiercest rivalry is renewed. Head men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski and the top-ranked Blue Devils travel a few miles down 15-501 for a head-on collision with the No. 17 Tar Heels in the Dean Dome tonight, looking to post their 16th consecutive victory and continue their recent dominance over their arch-nemesis.

The Ramblin' Wreck, the little engine that just couldn't--until this year. At season's start, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (16-3, 4-2 in the ACC) were predicted to finish in the cellar of the ACC, where they usually end up. But after blazing to a 12-0 start, Paul Hewitt's club demanded respect around the league. The Ramblin' Wreck's next test, a date with Duke (16-1, 5-0) on Saturday afternoon in Alexander Memorial Coliseum, will prove whether or not they can hang with the big dog.
Frustration was what the doctor prescribed for Julius Hodge and the rest of the N.C. State Wolfpack Thursday night. Duke's (13-1, 3-0 in the ACC) tenacious defense forced Herb Sendek's squad into 20 turnovers and a miserable ride back to Raleigh after a 76-57 loss in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Vengeance is at the root of every rivalry, or so said my philosophy of sport teacher. This season's first matchup between N.C. State (9-2, 2-0 in the ACC) and Duke (12-1, 2-0) can be characterized by the Blue Devils' startling comeback in last year's ACC championship game. Trailing by 15 points midway through the second half, Duke went a torrid run fueled by J.J. Redick's 23 points in the final 10 minutes of the game. That was the precursor for tonight's matchup in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
They're everywhere; on the big screen, the hardwood, the gridiron and maybe even sitting across the court from you sometime this season. Yes, the proclaimed underdog. The giant killer. Gonzaga took the role back in 1999 when they made a run to the Elite Eight before losing to eventual champion Connecticut. Now, teams like Butler and UNC-Wilmington are shocking three-seeds across the country.
Raleigh, NC -- What a difference a week can make. The women's basketball team rebounded from last weekend's loss to No. 3 Texas and throttled No. 5 Purdue 93-63 on Sunday afternoon at the RBC Center. During the decisive surge in the second half the Blue Devils (2-1) were able to utilize role players and solid team defense to dismantle the Boilermakers (1-1) in the Jimmy V Classic.
CARY, N.C. -- Sometimes it's not in the cards, no matter how hard you try. In a match that portrayed the Blue Devils' season, Wake Forest forward and ACC Player of the Year Jeremiah White scorched a goal past Duke netminder Justin Trowbridge with under two minutes remaining in regulation to make the score 2-1. The Demon Deacons (15-3, 4-2 in the ACC) tacked on another goal with seconds left at the SAS Soccer Complex en route to a 3-1 victory over the Blue Devils (8-10-1, 2-4).
Being the new kid on the block can be tough, but with the right attitude, the transition can be silky smooth. Brittany Hunter, entering Duke after being named the consensus High School National Player of the Year, is learning more about the game and improving with her freshman teammate Alison Bales at each Blue Devil practice.
Head Coach: Paul Hewitt: @ Georgia Tech: 48-44, 4th season; Overall: 114-71, 7th year. National Championships: 0; Final Four appearances: 0
According to the Chinese calendar it may be the year of the Sheep, but the men's soccer team has been living in the year of the Streak. After suffering a nine-game stretch without a win, the Blue Devils (7-9-1) promptly shifted gears and won five straight matches before last Friday's 4-0 loss to No. 3 Wake Forest. Now Duke hopes to start another victory streak with its last regular season game against the South Florida Bulls (6-6-3) at Koskinen Stadium on Wednesday night.
The sky was overcast, clouds were pouring heavy rain and the field of battle was in prime condition for combat. No, there was not a filming of Platoon at Koskinen Stadium Sunday, but rather a hard-fought 1-0 overtime victory by the men's soccer team (7-8-1) against a feisty Charlotte (4-9-2) squad. A fatigued Blue Devil team, which extended its winning streak to an impressive five games, sent its' parents home with back-to-back wins this weekend, including a 3-1 win over UNC Greensboro Friday night.
