Fandom: passion versus prudence

(04/03/14 9:00am)

Some experts had pegged Mercer to be a Cinderella in the NCAA tournament. The team’s overall height, combined with the experience of their seven seniors compared to Duke’s two and one graduate student on scholarship, would propel the No. 14 seed past the No. 3, they predicted. So, in one of my four brackets, I listened to their advice. I advanced Mercer to the Round of 32. It hurt me to do so—and it hurt even more when the Bears came out on top in the tournament.

Could this be the beginning of a Duke-Syracuse rivalry?

I have been at Duke for almost a year and a half now, and it has snowed one time. I remember exactly where I was when the first flake fell last January—in The Loop eating dinner with a friend. When I walked outside, there was maybe a half-of-an-inch of snow on the ground at most, but the entire campus was a ghost town. The bus schedule was a mess, all parties that night had been cancelled already and—my most vivid memory—there was a sign adorning the six stairs leading up to the chapel announcing “STAIRS CLOSED” in big, black letters. My friend and I felt rebellious and walked up them anyway.

HALFTIME: Duke 33, Miami 21

(01/23/14 6:38am)

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>In one of the slowest-pace games Duke has played this season, the Blue Devils managed to secure a 12-point lead going into halftime, due to the stellar play of Jabari Parker. Parker, who struggled in both of Duke's ACC road contests this season, led the team with eight points and seven rebounds during the first half. The freshman, along with Quinn Cook, carried the Blue Devils offensively, as the point guard tallied eight points, including six off two successful 3-points. Miami, meanwhile, was paced by forward James Kelly, who notched seven points. Big man Tonye Jerkiri, standing at 7'0", added six points for the Hurricanes while collecting a team-leading three boards.Observations from the first half:

A familiar rise

David Cutcliffe interviewed with many people during the selection process for the new head coach of Duke football in 2007. He talked to then-Athletics Director Joe Alleva. He talked to President Richard Brodhead. He talked to linebacker Vincent Rey, who would become Cutcliffe's first team captain and now plays for the Cincinnati Bengels.
