“Did you know that muscles only pull? You think they push but they can only pull.” As if seizing the space with her arms, extending them from side to side, Kate Trammel, dancer and choreographer, acted out the mechanisms of muscles in a short monologue excerpted from the upcoming performance of Namely, Muscles on Saturday.

The very essence of flamenco lies in raw, human, physical attraction. There is nothing sexier than witnessing the performance of flamenco, let alone dancing the flamenco. This past Tuesday, I participated in a free community workshop held by Flamenco Vivo, Carlota Santana’s dance company.

'Royals' is a testament to that disillusionment and whether she likes it or not, her gritty, no lux-loving hit sits on the top of the charts. Although the content of the rest of the album remains cunningly rebellious, the other songs don’t live up to the pop-worthy elements in 'Royals.' That isn’t to say that they aren’t praiseworthy—instead, they intimate a much more talented artist in the works.

True to this clearer approach to production, the album features more acoustic and almost folk-like elements, as showcased on opening track 'A Stillness.' Alisa’s initial drone-like vocals, set against the sharper rhythmic guitar chords, make for an interesting mix. But subtle nuances of machine-like noise become increasingly audible and suddenly the song seems to deconstruct itself, drawing in some MGMT-like chaos.

“How far do I have to go to get you? / Many the miles/ Many the miles.” These lyrics and melodies of bittersweet reflection, taken straight from a Sara Bareilles album, settle into the spaces of Brody Theater. The Miles, a senior distinction project written by and featuring senior Theater Studies Steven Li, centers on finding identities through changing relationships. The play’s title, along with its themes, allude to songs by Sara Bareilles that Li chose to incorporate in order to enhance each character’s transformation.
The Miles explores the conflicts that arise when love, duty and desire adversely cross each other’s paths. Three characters—Sam, Bobby and Emma—find themselves caught in moments of desperation and confusion as they try to determine where their true values and responsibilities lie. The play tells a coming-of-age story in which all three characters explore their sexuality, relationships and, in turn, identities.
