The one-dimensionality of Indian restaurant food

The food at Indian restaurants in America revolves around 2 subregions of Indian cuisine. I’ve always been confused about where the familiarly aromatic flavors of my north Indian mother’s cooking went — perhaps they were lost in translation. I could never find the countless rice dishes I used to eat at my south Indian friends’ houses — the nutty notes of the coconut, the subtle sourness of the curd rice, the trifecta of sweet, sour and spicy in puliyogare – at most, the kind of Indian culinary representation we get in America is reduced to a few south Indian and Mughlai dishes.



Reflections on a life lived through social media: The internet can never BeReal

Recently, the rising popularity of BeReal has me questioning whether social media will ever truly be real. At the end of the day, social media is fundamentally designed for us to share our “highlight reels," and yet I do think the original social media I remember was very authentic, especially when I was a middle schooler in 2015.

Brooks Frederickson is a sixth-year doctoral candidate in music composition at Duke. He studies music and technology, specifically digital music making, the affordances of digital software and the current (music) software environment today. He also runs the Duke Laptop Ensemble, which is part of the Duke Chamber Music program.
