Four-star quarterback Chazz Surratt flips commitment to North Carolina

A four-star quarterback's recent flip from Duke to North Carolina this week has become latest installment of the Tobacco Road rivalry.

Chazz Surratt became the latest high-profile prospect to verbally commit to the Blue Devil program back in April, but the Denver, N.C. native has decommitted from Duke and committed to the Tar Heels, according to a post on his Twitter account Friday.

Surratt is ranked as the 22nd-best dual threat quarterback in the country by ESPN and the 13th-best dual-threat prospect by 247Sports. He also spent the last few weeks participating in the prestigious Elite 11 competition in California, where he made it to the semifinals, but was not named one of 18 finalists who moved onto the next round of competition in Oregon.

According to 247Sports' Adam Rowe, a major factor in Surratt's flip to North Carolina was the ability to attend school with his younger brother, Sage, who was recently offered a walk-on spot on the Tar Heel's basketball team. Chazz Surratt indicated that he would like to continue his "football and basketball career" in Chapel Hill, but it is unclear if he will play both sports.

Surratt's decommitment leaves the Blue Devils without a quarterback in the 16-member 2016 recruiting class. David Cutcliffe signed three-star prospect Quentin Harris in February and will welcome Charlotte-native Daniel Jones to the program as a preferred walk-on this Fall, with the intention of making him a scholarship player in Spring 2016.

Although Surratt's decision leaves Duke with just two four-star recruits, Scott Bracey and Mark Birmingham, in the 2016 class, 247Sports.com still ranks it 15th in the nation and third in the ACC, only behind conference powerhouses Florida State and Miami (FL).

Surratt's switch will likely open the door for David Cutcliffe to offer and heavily recruit quarterbacks who previously overlooked the program because the team normally only takes one player at the position per class.
