Durham may not be out of the woods in terms of winter weather just yet.

After Duke saw its first snowfall of the year this week, more could be on the way—though likely not enough to see classes canceled again. Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-40s by Sunday, with a high chance of sleet and rain, but cold is expected to return early next week and snow showers are possible Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Thursday saw near-record low temperatures, with high temperatures in the area in the mid-20s and wind chills of below zero. The outlook for Friday is similar, and though temperatures will climb this weekend, winds will still be strong. Low temperatures and wet spots on local roadways mean that black ice could form, making driving conditions poor.

Durham Public Schools are closed again Friday, giving students nearly a week off from school after being released early Monday and having the rest of the week canceled.

Duke enacted the Severe Weather and Emergency Conditions policy from 7 p.m. Monday to 5 p.m. Tuesday, but has been operating normally since, with the majority of campus sidewalks and roads cleared. Other area institutions—including North Carolina Central University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University—made similar decisions.
