Duke offers Thornton, No. 2 point guard in Class of 2016

2016 may end up being the year of the point guard in Durham.

After extending an offer to Fayetteville, N.C., native Dennis Smith—the top-ranked point guard in the Class of 2016—earlier in the month, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski furthered his chances of getting the best point guard possible Monday when he offered Derryck Thornton. Thornton is currently ranked as the No. 2 point guard in the Class of 2016.

First reported by ESPN's Reggie Rankin, Krzyzewski, along with two assistants, visited Thornton at Findlay High School to meet with Thornton. After watching him work out, the Blue Devil staff officially extended their offer.

Thornton has yet to narrow down his option and is still considering fellow powerhouse programs like Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, Arizona, Florida and more. 247Sports currently ranks the Wolverines as his No. 1 choice, but his decision time is still a long time coming. He is expected to cut his list in the coming month.

Per John Pavia of Zagsblog, Thornton has considered the option of playing in college with friend and fellow guard Tyus Battle. Battle has also been extended an offer and will be visiting Duke for Countdown to Craziness Oct. 25.

“It’s kind of up in the air,” Thornton said. “Nothing is set for sure. It would be cool to play with him, but it’s not like a sure package deal.”
