2014 NCAA tournament preview: Dayton

Dayton Flyers

Record: 23-10

Head coach: Archie Miller (2nd season)

Season summary: The Flyers are among the multitude of Atlantic-10 squads that earned a tournament berth, despite having few marquee victories and an early quarterfinal exit from their conference tournament. Dayton is no stranger to close games—seven of its 10 defeats were by 10 points or less, including three losses to Saint Joseph’s, which completed a season sweep of the Flyers with the quarterfinal victory in the Atlantic-10 tournament. Dayton hit a rough four-game skid in January, but soon rebounded, winning 10 of its last 12 contests. Senior forward Devin Oliver leads Dayton in rebounds(7.5) and assists(2.4) per game and is the team’s second-leading scorer. There is no one major threat for Dayton—the Flyers are a deep and experienced squad that has the potential to pull an upset.

How they make a run: Dayton scores by committee, spreading the production around and manage to pull off an upset or two in the process.

How they falter: Opposing teams' talent and championship pedigree are too much for the Flyers.
