Just two days after guard Leslie McDonald was reinstated by North Carolina, the university today announced in a release that it will not apply for reinstatement of guard P.J. Hairston, effectively ending his tenure with the Tar Heel basketball program.
North Carolina head coach Roy Williams had the following to say about the junior:
"I am extremely disappointed for P.J., his family and our team as he will no longer be playing basketball at North Carolina," says head coach Roy Williams. "P.J. made mistakes and I was very disappointed by his actions and now he is suffering the very difficult consequences. He is not a bad kid; he just made some mistakes.Williams also noted that Hairston has been called a 'perfect teammate' and that Hairston has been doing well in school.
It is unclear what Hairston's next move is at this time. In March of 2012 Georgia Tech dismissed Glen Rice, Jr. from its basketball team, and Rice went on to play in the NBA D-League before entering the NBA draft. There was speculation that Hairston would enter the NBA draft following this season, after averaging 14.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in his sophomore season.
