A Durham Development Review Board agenda from Jan. 6, 2012 reveals that the current owner of the property, Concorde Greenburg Durham Hotel, plans to build a 133,950-square-foot hotel with 145 rooms. For a hotel, the aging hospital is a prime location in Durham—it is close to Duke’s campus for visiting parents and within walking distance of both Ninth Street and downtown.
It is hard to imagine a nice hotel being built here, however, given the current state of the property. The building now looks like an idyllic place for the filming of a horror movie or a modern-day haunted house. It's an unforgettable sight, if only for it's chilling exterior.
