N.C. State football preview

After posting an 8-6 record, N.C. State fired head coach Tom O’Brien following what could only be called an average season for the Wolfpack in 2012.

With the hiring of Dave Doeren, whose Northern Illinois team won 12 games and reached the Orange Bowl last season, N.C. State remains under the microscope as one of the more intriguing stories in the ACC this season. The Wolfpack enter the season with a solid roster that is capable of leading them back to the top of the ACC and into bowl contention.

Adjusting to a new offensive system will be a primary concern for an offense that remains without a clear starting quarterback. Fifth-year transfer Brandon Mitchell appears to be the frontrunner due to his size, speed and ability to run Doeren’s spread offense.

In previous years, Wolfpack teams have over-emphasized the passing game but this season will see an improved rushing scheme that may include up to three running backs, including freshman Matt Dayes, who is poised to make a significant impact.

N.C. State boasts a strong defensive line and a small collection of playmakers in the linebacking core and secondary. The collective group remains untested and inexperienced, though, relying on the play of seniors on the line and in the secondary to limit opponents’ scoring.
