9/10 - 9/15 Weekly Preview

Now that the political conventions are over with, there’s no excuse for you not to be able to attend one of Duke’s many events this week.

Monday:

America 2012: Challenges and Opportunities: Hosted by the Sanford School of Public Policy and American Grand Strategy at 5:30 p.m. in Page Auditorium

Make sure to stop by the Duke Box Office in the Bryan Center to get your tickets to see former Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. A former diplomat, businessman, and twice-elected governor of Utah, Huntsman will discuss America’s focus on foreign affairs with Duke Professor Peter Feaver in a Terry Sanford Distinguished Lecture, entitled “America 2012: Challenges and Opportunities.” The event is free and open to the public, and tickets may also be ordered at the following link (an additional service charge applies).

Interviewing Skills Workshop: Hosted by the Career Center from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in Gray 228

For all of you seniors out there, there is more to a good interview than merely showing up dressed nicely. Make sure to attend this workshop taught by a Career Center counselor in order to learn about what can be expected from an initial interview and some essential strategies as well. There are many more workshops that will take place later on campus. Check out Duke Events for more information.

General Electric (GE) Information Session: Hosted by the Pratt School of Engineering from 8:00-9:30 p.m. at the Fitzpatrick Center Schiciano Auditorium Side B (Map)

Come listen to Pratt Engineering Alumni (who are also GE Representatives) and learn more about internships, employment, career paths and the interview process at GE. Make connections now so that you don’t regret waiting until the last minute later!

Cornerstone Research Information Session: Hosted by the Career Center from 8:00-9:15 p.m. in the West Union Old Trinity Room

Check out this recruiting event for Cornerstone Research—a financial consulting firm that provides expert testimony and economic analysis to attorneys, corporations and government agencies involved in business proceedings. This firm is one of the top financial firms in the nation, and has offices in Boston, Los Angeles, New York, D.C. and many other states. Visit the Cornerstone website to learn more!

Tuesday:

Global Education Fair: Hosted by the Global Education Office for Undergraduates from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Bryan Center Schaefer Mall

Do you want to study abroad next semester or volunteer with NGOs this upcoming summer? Well then, check out the Global Education Fair that’s taking place this Tuesday! Get information about international opportunities and talk to faculty, staff and program representatives about the many global opportunities available to Duke students.

National 9/11 Day of Service and Recognition: Hosted by the Duke Community Service Center  from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Smith Warehouse Building

In memory of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, take part in the collective efforts of local AmeriCorps members as they strive to recognize the sacrifices made by local servicemen by writing ‘Thank You’ cards. This is an easy way to get engaged with the local community! These cards will later be delivered to Fire Station #2 right off of Duke’s campus.

DukeEngage Information Session: Hosted By Duke Engage from 4:00-5:00 p.m. at Smith Warehouse in Classroom B252 (Bay 7)

This session will offer a broad overview of the program and the application process leading up to the announcement of the new programs this coming year. Students are encouraged to attend an information session before applying to Duke Engage programs on Oct. 1. Check out this schedule of future information sessions and look into the various programs that Duke Engage has to offer!

‘Pariah’ Dinner and Movie: Hosted By the Center for LGBT Life from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at The Center for LGBT Life in the West Union Building

The Center of LGBT Life and Department of African American Studies will be showing ‘Pariah’, an emotional roller-coaster story of an African-American teenager’s struggle to come out. The main character of the film, Alike, transitions from a basketball-playing tomboy to a sour faced daughter forced to wear pink by her mom.  Throughout the film, Alike’s distress in life becomes believable as her story begins to connect to audience members. Oh yeah, did I mention that the dinner and movie is for free?! Check out the trailer for the film.

Men's Soccer vs. Georgia State: 7:00 p.m.

Dress yourself in Duke attire, eat your dinner and head out to the soccer stadium for some old fashioned Cameron craziness. Quick note: your voice will probably be gone by the end of the night. I know this from experience.

Wednesday:

Jazz at the Mary Lou: Hosted by the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture and the Duke University Union (DUU) from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at the Mary Lou Williams Center

One of my favorite events of Orientation Week was heading over to the Durham Performing Arts Center to see the John Brown Band perform live. Now we get to see them again! Relieve some stress, take part in the engaging atmosphere of jazz music, and enjoy live performances by local musicians, current Duke students, and special guest artists—all prearranged by Director of Jazz Studies John Brown. Light hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be provided courtesy of the Plate & Pitchfork. This event, as marvelous as it is, will be free and open to the public.

Thursday:

Annual Volunteer Fair: Hosted by the Duke Community Service Center (DCSC) from 12:00-3:00 p.m. at the Bryan Center Schaefer Mall

Done in collaboration with the Volunteer Center of Durham, this event connects Duke students with local non-profit organizations and allows us to explore and find many valuable service opportunities. I will be going to this one.

Local Activism for Global Change: Human Rights in Ethiopia: Hosted by the Women's Center and Baldwin Scholars Program from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the Women’s Center (Map)

Make sure to attend this amazing lecture by Ikal Angelei, 2012 Goldman Prize recipient. Friends of Lake Turkana, an organization that Angelei founded, convinced the World Bank to divest from the Gibe 3 Dam—a hydroelectric plant in Ethiopia that is highly controversial due to its environmental impact. Angelei will discuss grassroots level activism and human rights in Ethiopia. Check it out! Plus, a free lunch is provided!

Come support the Blue Devils as they take on the Richmond Spiders Friday night.
