Stroman garners Perfect Game first-team All-American honors

Junior Marcus Stroman is one of 16 players chosen for Perfect Game's 2012 preseason All-America first team.

Stroman, who has been a starter, relief pitcher and second baseman in his two seasons with the Blue Devils, had a 2.80 earned-run average in 64.1 innings in 2011. The 5-foot-9, 185-pounder also ranked third in the nation by averaging 12.6 strikeouts per nine innings, impressing scouts with a 95-98 mile-per-hour fastball.

The Medford, N.Y. native played on the USA Baseball collegiate national team last summer, converting 4-for-4 in save opportunities by throwing 8.1 hitless innings. He struck out 17 of the 27 batters he faced in those innings, issuing just one walk.

Stroman is joined by Florida State's James Ramsey as the only ACC players named to the first team. Florida catcher Mike Zunino was named preseason player of the year, and Stanford right-handed starter Mark Appel is the preseason pitcher of the year.
