Cunha and Carleton fall in Indoor Championships

The men’s tennis team unceremoniously finished the fall season this weekend in Flushing, N.Y., at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships. Though the Blue Devils were riding the momentum of spectacular fall results, sophomore Henrique Cunha and senior Reid Carleton fell early in both doubles and singles competition at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the home of the U.S. Open.

The duo lost in the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament to the No. 43 team of Kevin King and Juan Spir of Georgia Tech, 8-5. The loss marked only the second time of the season that Cunha and Carleton had lost together, as they posted a 12-2 record over the fall schedule.

In singles play, Cunha won the first set of his match with No. 10 Austen Childs of Louisville, but lost the next two sets to fall 6-3, 2-6, 3-6. Against Tennessee’s Rhyne Williams, Carleton fell in straight sets, 1-6, 3-6.

Despite the losses, both Carleton and Cunha had successful fall seasons, each winning two individual titles and collecting another two titles as a team in doubles.

The Blue Devils will resume play Jan. 8 in Hawaii with the Hills Family Winter Trip.
