Program to evaluate Merchants

Students left hungry by slow-delivering restaurants now have a way to express their dissatisfaction-other than not tipping, that is.

The Duke University Student Dining Advisory Committee announced the beginning of the Merchant Quality Review program at their meeting Monday night to collect students' impressions of Merchants On Points restaurants.

DUSDAC members and a group of 15 other students will order food from these restaurants and evaluate their customer service and food quality.

"The surveys will get us a greater breadth of feedback from students," said Merchants on Points Coordinator Andrew Berdy, a senior. "In an effort to ensure diversity [of dining choices] now and the highest quality service and products, we started thinking about this [survey] last semester, and it is now coming to fruition."

DUSDAC is also asking for feedback from the student body on Merchants on Points restaurants through an online survey.

All student input will be given to Duke Dining Services and used to provide feedback to merchants, said DUSDAC Co-chair Sarah Ramig, a senior.

"If we have documentation of negative experiences, we can go to managers and say, 'We're not happy with it,'" she said.

The information may also help DUSDAC decide to eliminate some merchants in the future, said DUSDAC Co-chair Jason Taylor, a junior.

Taylor also announced that Chai's Noodle Bar and Restaurant should be ready to deliver on the Merchants on Points program within two weeks. The restaurant is still waiting to receive the equipment it needs to charge students for their orders, he explained.
