Blue Devils win season's first relay

WINSTON-SALEM - Six Duke pairs placed in the top 10 at the Wake Forest Relays Friday, guiding the Blue Devils to a close win in their first meet of the season.

"This vindicates what we have been doing in training the last two weeks," head coach Norm Ogilvie said. "I think we are going in the right direction."

Freshman Stephen Clark and sophomore Bo Waggoner placed second overall with a combined time of 45:38. They were followed by junior Tradelle Ward and sophomore Cory Nanni in fourth and freshman Andrew Brodeur and sophomore Josh Lund in fifth.

Each pair completed two non-consecutive 3.5-kilometer loops of the course. The places of the top three pairs were added to calculate each team's final score.

Duke scored 11 points, followed by High Point with 14. Elon finished third, Wingate fourth, and Wake Forest fifth.

Ogilvie was particularly pleased with the performance of his freshman class in their first meet.

Clark owned the fastest Blue Devil time of the day, placing third in 22:47 and beating out Waggoner by 4 seconds. Brodeur placed seventh, while fellow freshman James Kostelnik finished 11th, showcasing the strength of Duke's newest runners.
