Goodwin for EVP

If there is anyone who can fix the kinks in Duke Student Government’s system, it is junior Brandon Goodwin. With his extensive DSG experience—two years as a senator and currently the vice president of student affairs—Goodwin possesses the institutional knowledge that DSG sorely needs.

Since the executive vice president sets the agenda, it is important that he has a good understanding of both the organization and the needs of the University. Goodwin seems to have that understanding—he speaks about projects instead of philosophies and wants his agenda to have a tangible focus that produces actual results.

Goodwin’s platform in his campaign for executive vice president covers all of the right things and shows his through understanding of the role of the executive vice president. Goodwin wants to downsize DSG, a move that is absolutely necessary if DSG hopes to be an effective organization. DSG has already shrunk the Senate, now Goodwin plans to reduce the number of Cabinet positions. This will give more responsibility to fewer people and as a result, more will get done.

A self-described “policy dork,” Goodwin knows the ins and the outs of legislative procedure—something that is vital for an executive vice president. Goodwin also wants to better educate senators about these procedures, ensuring that all of DSG knows the rules of their organization. This will help DSG accomplish more while giving it more legitimacy.

Goodwin also wants to explore restructuring elections with a President/EVP ticket. This is an idea that warrants discussion, but Goodwin needs to remember than any election restructuring needs to happen in the fall in order for there to be enough preparation time before the spring elections.

The Chronicle endorses Brandon Goodwin for executive vice president.
