Duke, YMCA end agreement

After failing to arrive at a satisfactory definition of "family," Duke and the YMCA terminated their agreement to offer discounted membership dues for Duke families. Duke counts same-sex couples as families, but the YMCA does not.

Bus runs over employee
A Duke bus accidentally ran over the left arm and both legs of a Medical Center employee on Trent Drive June 17. In the wake of the incident, Parking and Transportation Services investigated the incident but found the driver was not at fault.

ER to undergo overhaul
In order to better meet the growing needs of the community, Duke University Medical Center Emergency Department will receive $29.8 million to expand and renovate its emergency room facilities. Construction is slated to begin in 2005.

Searches consider diversity
In an effort to increase diversity, the University added an official step to check that minority candidates are being considered for high-level positions. If the Office of Institutional Equity deems the applicant pool too narrow, searches can be extended.
