Cox breaks verbal commitment

Joe Cox, a 6-foot-1 quarterback from Independence High School in Charlotte, N.C., reneged on his verbal commitment to the Blue Devils, opting instead to accept a scholarship to play at Georgia.

One of Duke's two quarterback commitments, Cox threw for 3,983 yards and over 40 touchdowns as a junior last year under current Duke quarterbacks coach Tom Knotts. An able replacement for Chris Leak, Cox led Independence to a fourth consecutive state championship.

The move effectively reopens Duke's quarterback recruiting for the class of 2005. The Blue Devils already have a commitment from Wilmington (Del.) Salesianum quarterback Gene Delle Donne, one of the nation's toop prospects.

Duke alumnus ties MLS record

Former Blue Devil soccer standout Jason Kreis scored his 88th career goal Saturday night, tying the MLS record.

Kreis, who currently plays with the Dallas Burn, was a two-time Blue Devil All-America selection, scoring 39 goals for Duke between 1991-1994. He is fifth all-time on Duke's career points list.

Redick asked to try out for Under-20 team

Duke guard J.J. Redick has been invited to try out for the Under-20 World Championship team.

The Duke junior is one of 18 players with previous USA Basketball experience of the 24 athletes who have been asked to compete for a spot. Redick played on the 2003 Junior World Championship Team.

Redick averaged a team-high 15.9 points per game for the Blue Devils last season.

Four named to developmental lax team

Four members of the Duke women's lacrosse team were named to the U.S. Developmental Team. The squad, which includes Katie Chrest, Megan Huether, Leigh Jester and Stefanie Sparks, will participate in events leading up to the 2005 IFWLA World Cup.

The Blue Devils earned slots on the team after a two-day tryout in Maryland. The four Duke players are the most participants from any school besides Princeton.
