Hemmerich named Fuqua associate dean

The new Fuqua School of Business associate dean for strategy and institutional research will be real estate executive Michael Hemmerich, Trinity '80, Law '85 and Fuqua '94.

Hemmerich's duties will be primarily focusing on executive education and alliances with peer institutions, Dean Douglas Breeden said in a statement.

"Mike is not only a very friendly and polished person, but also a person of impressive intellect and business experience who has demonstrated rock-solid loyalty to Duke and a generous commitment to community causes," Breeden said. "I feel very fortunate that we have been able to attract him to a full-time position at Fuqua."

Hemmerich will work at Fuqua full-time, and maintain a small interest in property management at hi firm, the Dilweg Companies.

Neighbors endorse new zoning ordinance

Tuesday night, the InterNeighborhood Council of Durham voted in favor of a proposed university-college zoning ordinance for Central Campus, which will permit Duke to install more retail outlets there.

The ordinance specifically permits three restaurants, a hotel, a bookstore and a bowling alley. There was an unsuccessful effort at the meeting by some INC members to postpone the vote until more neighborhoods could weigh in on the issue.
