Recruit wooed by Cameron

As enormous a shock as the Upstate All-Stars received in getting trounced Saturday by the men's basketball team, they weren't the most surprised ones in Cameron Indoor Stadium. That honor went to Corey Maggette, the 6-foot-5 recruit from Oak Park, Ill., whom a packed student section greeted with a "We want Corey" chant.

"I didn't expect everybody to come to the exhibition game like this," Maggette said. "It showed a real good team spirit with the crowd. My impression [of Duke] is better."

Maggette declined to say whether he would pick Duke over his other suitors, which include Stanford and Illinois. He did, however, call this weekend's visit more comfortable than those at the other schools, citing his friendships with Blue Devil freshmen Shane Battier, Elton Brand, William Avery and Chris Burgess. Before his visit, he knew all four from summer basketball camps.

"If you're not friends with the players, it ain't going to work out," said Maggette, who stayed Friday and Saturday nights with Battier and Brand.

Maggette, called the best prep wing forward in America by PrepStars, is generally regarded as one of the nation's 15 best high school seniors.
