Track teams get tuneup for ACCs

From staff reports

The men's and women's indoor track teams tuned up for next weekend's Atlantic Coast Conference meet by sending a few athletes to Chapel Hill to compete in the UNC Valentine Invitational at North Carolina's refurbished indoor track.

The highlight of the meet for the men's squad was the 3,000 meters, in which Duke took seven of the top 10 places. Freshman Scott Antoun led the Blue Devils with his 8:53.98 showing, which earned him second place in the race. Junior Darin Melinger was fourth in 8:57.16, and freshman Brandon Busteed finished fifth in 8:57.32.

"This was just a tuneup for next weekend, and most of our top guys took the week off," assistant coach Norm Ogilvie said. "It gave some of the younger Duke distance runners a chance to shine."

The women's squad set seven personal records at the meet. Both junior Kirsten Johnson (9.40 seconds) and sophomore Kim Voyticky (9.93) ran best-ever times in the 60-meter high hurdles.

Senior Megan Mitchell also came up strong in the shot put, throwing 10.73 meters.
