Beard decides to leave Duke

From staff reports

Sophomore forward Joey Beard has announced his intention to transfer from Duke University to Boston University at the end of the fall semester. He did not travel with the Blue Devils to Chicago for Saturday's game against Illinois, and he is no longer a member of the men's basketball team.

"I am very happy to have been given the opportunity by Coach K to play basketball at Duke," Beard said in a statement. "I just felt that at this time I needed a change. I want to wish the best of luck to Duke and will follow the success of the team in the future."

Beard has not played in any of Duke's games this season after contracting mononucleosis in the preseason. Last year, Beard averaged 1.3 points and 0.5 rebounds in 15 games as the Blue Devils advanced to the NCAA title game with a 28-6 record.

"We're thankful to have had Joey in our basketball program," head coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement. "We certainly wish him the very best in all future endeavors."
