Smoking banned in eateries

Smoking will be banned in most campus eateries beginning next month.

The new policy will ban smoking in nearly every dining hall, but will allow limited smoking areas on each campus.

Under the new policy, smoking will be forbidden at all times inside almost all West Campus eateries, including the Blue and White Room, the Cambridge Inn and the Oak Room.

Smoking will be permitted on West Campus on the outdoor patios outside the Rathskeller and the University Room, and on the terrace next to the Boyd-Pishko Cafe inside the Bryan Center.

People will also be allowed to smoke on the balconies in the East Union and in the Trent Cafeteria television lounge.

Customers will be allowed to smoke in the Central Campus Pub at all times. The East Campus Coffee House is exempt from the new regulations because it is not considered to be University-run.

The new policy was developed after students expressed concern about smoking last month. ASDU legislators passed a resolution calling for a complete ban on smoking in most campus eateries from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The managers of the various dining facilities thought a policy allowing smoking in certain locations rather than at specific times would be easier to enforce, said Wes Newman, director of Dining and Special Events.

"We thought the best compromise would be to have designated smoking areas -- there is one on each campus," said Trinity sophomore Tarnuja Garde, author of the resolution.

Students did not want a complete ban on smoking, Garde said.

The policy should be implemented in mid-May after Union No. 77, which represents the dining workers, has had 30 days to review the new regulations as specified in its contract with the University.

The smoking policy of the Faculty Commons will remain unchanged. Individuals can smoke in the lounge of the Faculty Commons but not in the dining room.

The new policy affects only dining areas; other University facilities will not be affected. Smoking is not permitted throughout the Medical Center.
