Beyond the arc: Duke basketball vs. Syracuse

(02/02/14 12:09pm)

In the game of the year, No. 17 Duke (17-5, 6-3 in the ACC) fell 91-89 in overtime at No. 2 Syracuse (21-0, 8-0) Saturday at the Carrier Dome. In front of a record-setting crowd of 35,446, the Blue Devils and the Orange pushed each other to the limit in a game that seemed like the start of a budding rivalry between the new conference foes. Syracuse showed its strength and balance on both ends of the court, shooting 57.4 percent for the game and controlling the paint with its frontcourt length. Junior forward Rakeem Christmas blocked six shots and the other Orange starters all scored at least 14 points, led by senior forward C.J. Fair who had a career-high with 28.

The key three: Duke basketball vs. Pittsburgh

(01/28/14 2:56am)

After just one day off, No. 17 Duke (15-4, 5-2 in the ACC) will take on No. 18 Pittsburgh (16-2, 6-1) Monday at 7 p.m. at the Petersen Events Center in the teams’ first matchup as conference foes. Duke’s recent rebounding progress and success on the road will be put to the test against one of the three teams ahead of the Blue Devils in the ACC standings. The Panthers are one of the nation’s best defensive teams and allow just 60.2 points per game. The game holds further significance because the Blue Devils play at No. 2 Syracuse later in the week, making Monday’s game the start of a huge two-game stretch. Here are the three keys to a Duke victory:

Beyond the arc: Duke Basketball vs. Miami

(01/23/14 8:08am)

No. 18 Duke (15-4, 4-2 in the ACC) earned its first road win of the season, knocking off Miami 67-46 on Wednesday at the BankUnited Center. The Blue Devils were led by freshman phenom Jabari Parker, who had 17 points, a career-high 15 rebounds and three blocks. Redshirt sophomore Rodney Hood added 12 points and six rebounds and sparked a big Duke run at the end of the first half that gave the Blue Devils a 33-21 lead at the break. The Hurricanes (10-8, 2-4) were successful in slowing down the tempo of the game, but gave up too many offensive rebounds and committed too many turnovers to keep up with Duke. Miami fought hard after getting behind 42-23 early in the second half but was unable to make enough plays to make a comeback in front of celebrities LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Kobe Bryant.

The key three: Duke basketball vs. N.C. State

(01/18/14 9:34pm)

No. 23 Duke (13-4, 2-2 in the ACC) will attempt to get above 0.500 in conference play for the first time this season when the Blue Devils host North Carolina State (11-6, 1-3) on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Wolfpack boast the ACC’s leading scorer—sophomore forward T.J. Warren—but have struggled thus far in conference play. Here are the three keys to a Duke victory:

Beyond the arc: Duke basketball vs. Virginia

(01/14/14 9:30am)

No. 23 Duke used sophomore guard Rasheed Sulaimon’s go-ahead 3-pointer that bounced high off the iron before dropping with 19.2 seconds left in the game to hold off Virginia 69-65 Monday at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Sulaimon and sophomore forward Amile Jefferson, who had 10 points and 15 rebounds, were the main reasons the Blue Devils were able to avenge last season’s loss to the Cavaliers. Jefferson assisted on Sulaimon’s dramatic trey and came up with the game-clinching steal and free throws, allowing Duke to remain unbeaten at home and get back to .500 in conference play. Duke was able to overcome another poor performance from freshman phenom Jabari Parker, who had just eight points on 3-of-11 shooting.

Cream of the Crop: Women's basketball update

(01/14/14 12:14am)

The top five remained unchanged this week after all of the premier teams took care of business last week. However, there was a change in the top 10 as Kentucky and Tennessee both lost in SEC play, meaning there was a reshuffle in spots 8-10 of the poll. The upcoming week features a huge slate of conference tests for the top teams and one final nonconference test for No. 1 Connecticut.

Beyond the arc: Duke basketball vs. Clemson

(01/12/14 3:39am)

No. 16 Duke (12-4, 1-2 in the ACC) got mauled in the second half and remained winless on the road this season, falling 72-59 to Clemson (11-4, 2-1) on Saturday at Littlejohn Coliseum. The Blue Devils were outscored 41-22 in the second half and shot just 33.9 percent from the field for the contest. Freshman phenom Jabari Parker scored 10 early points and Duke had opportunities to build a sizable lead in the first half, but the Tigers hung around and punished the Blue Devils in the paint in the second half when Duke hit its dry spell, just as Notre Dame did when the Irish upset the Blue Devils—Duke went the final 6:28 of the game without a made field goal. Clemson’s fans stormed the court after the win, one that will likely knock Duke out of the AP top 25 for the first time since 2007.
