Duke baseball sweeps Bucknell in 2013 home opener

In the first homestand of Chris Pollard’s tenure as head coach, Duke swept Bucknell this weekend at Jack Coombs Field. The Blue Devil pitching staff dominated the Bison, allowing just one run in the three games.

The second game of the series ended in dramatic fashion with the game tied 0-0 in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs in the frame, junior third baseman Jordan Betts knocked a two-run walk-off home run to left field, giving Duke a 2-0 win and ensuring a series victory. Senior right fielder Jeff Kremer began the rally with a one-out walk.

Sophomore southpaw Trent Swart tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings in the first game of the season, leading Duke to a 9-0 victory in the series’ first game. Swart retired the final 17 batters he faced, allowing just two total hits and did not issue a walk.

The Blue Devils finally yielded a run in the final game of the series but left with a 4-1 victory as junior right-hander Robert Huber improved to 2-0 on the season. Kremer was the catalyst for the offense once again, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
