Column: Potential reached, but errors prevent huge Duke win

Ted Roof had barely slept since Oct. 26, the day Duke named him named interim head football coach upon the firing of Carl Franks. Throughout his first week, Roof continually told the media that his days would begin at 6 a.m. and conclude after 2 a.m. But midway through the second quarter in the Blue Devils' game against N.C. State, Roof must have felt he was dreaming.

Show and tell is always an adventure. Post-toddler students bring in all sorts of things from their pet rocks to their pictures from Disney World to their Masters of the Universe: Mer-Man Evil Ocean Warlord action figures. But for Michael "Mic" and Terrence Davis "T.D." Roof--Duke head football coach Ted Roof's five-year-old twin sons--the pre-school pastime is even more special.

When analyzing the 2003 Major League Baseball playoffs, one cannot help but wonder if the baseball gods are smiling down upon us, granting wishes that many fans have desired for nearly a century. Some of baseball's greatest memories are instantly recalled with just the listing of the stadiums of the four remaining teams: Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Yankee Stadium and....Pro Player Stadium.


Football rejuvenated for Terps

In what can be interpreted as either a great strength or a debilitating weakness, the football team had its most intense week of practice during its bye week. After losing 56-7 against Florida State Saturday Sept. 27, the Blue Devils split their practice time in their off week between fundamentals and preparation for the Maryland matchup this Saturday. Drills went as scheduled last Tuesday and Wednesday, but the team practiced at 6 a.m. Thursday before enjoying a weekend without either practice or a game.









The kick heard 'round the Triangle

When Duke's 10-point lead collapsed in Saturday's 27-24 overtime win over Rice, many sports-writers inside the press box made many benign statements that implicitly translated to, "Great, I have to write another Duke blows a lead and loses by five points or less story." Human nature cannot prevent those thoughts from formulating, and after the game, players said the same cognition was going through their minds, as well.
