Fun to sit in class with a hernia

(08/29/02 4:00am)

Econ 51 is not always the most exciting class. It's especially dry on days of national crisis, as I discovered. I attended the class on Sept. 11. A new first-year friend from Manhattan had just been traumatized by the events earlier that morning. It was around 3 p.m. and class was carrying on all over campus, just like any other hot day in September. Off to Econ 51 we went. I had no idea what to say to her; I just knew she wanted someone to accompany her to class. Of course, she didn't pay attention in the huge lecture hall; I wasn't even enrolled in the class. We just sat there for an hour, and left two or three times to talk outside.

Stop, drop and roll: Smoking policy needs to be put out

(08/23/02 4:00am)

Last year's conflict between Duke Student Government and Campus Council over which group has authority over residential concerns unfortunately overshadowed one of the issues that spurred this debate in the first place--smoking. For the first time, smokers will not be allowed to smoke in their private dorm rooms. (I wonder what Washington Duke, a prominent tobacco baron and the University's namesake, would have to say about this.) Even though a campus resolution last year supported the ban, the will of the student body should not be the first consideration of the University in this case. Like any policy, the ban on smoking is only as effective as its enforcement.

Administration employs hypocritical write-up policy

(11/12/01 5:00am)

Within a few days of my arrival at Duke as a freshman this year, I quickly discovered that the possession or consumption of alcohol on East Campus is strictly forbidden. At the same time, I saw numerous fliers posted around my dormitory advertising the upcoming weekend's frat parties on West Campus. These parties soon became the highlight of every weekend: a quick ride to West to party with the upperclassmen, only later to snuggle into bed with the contents of those precious few bottles of beer you managed to find on West still fresh in your liver. Weekend after weekend, the routine is the same. Just keep an eye open for the latest frat party fliers, or better yet, befriend an upperclassman.
