The Tar Heels don’t enjoy being embarrassed, let alone in their home stadium. North Carolina is, after all, one of the most storied and successful programs in collegiate basketball, with a history of excellence. The team was even the preseason favorite to win the national title. So when Duke’s Austin Rivers hit a game-winning 3-pointer to pull the Blue Devils back from a late double-digit deficit in the Dean Dome Feb. 8, the blood flowing through the home locker room began to boil.

The Blue Devils may have rebounded with a win against St. John’s, 83-76, in their first home contest since last Saturday’s disappointing loss to Florida State, but head coach Mike Krzyzewski was certainly not pleased.

The Blue Devils may have been the favorite to win yesterday’s matchup with the Cavaliers, but it was not easy. Although they won, 61-58, it was not until the final seconds of the game that they could celebrate.

Seth Curry has always been a bit of a enigma. His quiet demeanor and unheralded arrival at Duke as a transfer from Liberty University have kept him out of the spotlight so far in his career.

One of the rarest sights in the sports world is an athlete who unintentionally stumbles upon the potential for a professional career. Instead, most players are usually bred for the big-time spotlight since their youth, and know little outside of a life revolving around their sport.

Duke has had little trouble scoring this season, but it has rarely done so early in games. The Blue Devils have been held scoreless in the first half multiple times this season, especially in the most recent five-game stretch, where they have recorded no first-half goals. Sunday afternoon against Virginia Tech, however, head coach Robbie Church and his team were relieved to see that their first goal came within the first three minutes of regulation, when freshman standout Kelly Cobb played a deflection into the left corner of the goal.

All Florida State needed was E.J. Manuel. After three straight losses with their preseason Heisman Trophy contender sidelined with a shoulder injury, the Seminoles celebrated the return of their dual-threat quarterback with a 41-16 rout of the Blue Devils.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — After 87 deadlocked minutes, in which the Duke defense successfully stopped a hungry North Carolina attack, goalkeeper Tara Campbell found herself lying on the ground as the ball slowly rolled away from her grasp and into the net.

Kelly Cobb comes to Durham from Chugiak, Alaska, and for the first time in years, the No. 4 Blue Devils are ranked higher than their rivals down Tobacco Road. Any statistics professor will tell you not to mistake this correlation for causation, but one cannot help but wonder.

Duke returned home yesterday after a four-day trip to Alabama, where they competed in the Auburn Tournament, splitting two contests. After a disappointing 1-0 loss to Auburn on Friday night, they rebounded to defeat Ole Miss on Sunday afternoon, 1-0.

The Blue Devils will make the short 20-minute commute to Cary, N.C., this weekend to participate in the ACC tournament. As the No. 1 seed in the field, Duke received a first-round bye and will play its first match against N.C. State Friday at 9 a.m. The Blue Devils (21-3, 10-1 in the ACC) easily defeated the Wolfpack (15-7, 5-6) 6-1 in the regular season.

The pregame warm-ups were quite the sight. Looking at Duke and UT-Martin practicing, one would not believe these two squads were about to play against one another, let alone in an NCAA Tournament game. The Blue Devils had a tremendous height advantage at every position.

Just a few weeks ago, the Blue Devils had opened up the season with 20 straight victories, and had yet to add a game to their loss column. They remained the only undefeated college basketball team in the nation. They had already taken down top squads like then-No. 7 Texas A&M and then-No. 4 Xavier.

Tenting season has come to a close. Brave students organized themselves into groups of 12, bought their brand-name tents and raided their local REI for the warmest sleeping bags, gloves and thermal underwear in stock.

There were only six competitive minutes in No. 5 Duke’s 76-52 rout of N.C. State Saturday—the first six. A scrappy Wolfpack squad, missing star freshman C.J. Leslie for a “violation of team rules,” managed to keep up with the Blue Devils, only down 10-8.

It’s the final stretch for senior Nolan Smith, and he knows it. He only has six games remaining at Cameron Indoor Stadium. That means he only has six more chances to hear Trip Durham announce his name in the starting line-up, and only six more chances to continue solidifying his name in Duke basketball history.
