On Jan. 14, 1976, Sylvia Hatchell paced the sidelines for the first time as a head coach, some butterflies in the stomach and a nervous tingle in her heart. Five hundred and five wins after leading tiny Francis Marion past Voorhees 88-62 in her collegiate coaching debut, Hatchell is guiding a school a little bigger, and with a bit more national prestige-North Carolina.


Duke's freshmen rebound from UNC setback with strong all-around effort

With 6:33 left in the first half of Duke's 86-72 win last night against Florida State, freshman Chris Burgess stepped to the free throw line, where it has been anything but charity for him this season. Burgess took his typically deliberate pre-shot routine and, to the amazement of the Cameron faithful, swished the freebie.

RALEIGH - After getting out of the gates quickly this season, Payton Black endured a three-game stretch earlier in the month during which she averaged a mere 12 minutes and 6.3 points per contest. One of Duke's top inside weapons was struggling, and head coach Gail Goestenkors knew it and did not like it.
