Q&A: Nolan Smith on the NBA draft and lockout

A number of former Duke basketball players, waiting for the NBA lockout to end, will be traveling with the Blue Devils on the tour of China and Dubai that kicked off yesterday. Recent Duke graduate Nolan Smith, who was drafted by the Portland Trailblazers in June, is the first of those players to join the team, though Grant Hill and Kyrie Irving are also expected to make appearances. As the group waited for its plane to arrive to Raleigh Durham Airport, The Chronicle’s Taylor Doherty caught up with Nolan to ask him about draft day.




Q&A with Charles Clotfelter

A book published this week by a Duke professor explores the relationship between high-profile athletics and higher education. In “Big-Time Sports in American Universities,” Charles Clotfelter, Z. Smith Reynolds professor of public policy and a professor of economics and law, writes about both the obvious and intangible costs and benefits associated with major programs. The Chronicle’s Taylor Doherty spoke to Clotfelter about his book’s findings and about what national trends reveal about Duke’s own athletics department.

About 60 admitted high school seniors attended Latino Student Recruitment Weekend, an annual event hosted by Mi Gente and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions that helps to recruit students to Duke. The prospective students, many of whom are still considering multiple college offers, participated in events that ranged from a game night to Noche Dorada, an evening event at the Washington Duke Inn. The Chronicle’s Taylor Doherty and Sanette Tanaka asked Duke students and visitors about their LSRW experiences.





Q & A with Seyward Darby

Seyward Darby served as editor of the 101st volume of The Chronicle in 2005-2006, when three Duke lacrosse players were falsely accused of raping an exotic dancer at a party held by the team. Since graduating in 2007, Darby moved to Washington, D.C. and works for The New Republic, where she serves as deputy online editor. Now five years since the March 13 party, The Chronicle’s Taylor Doherty and Lindsey Rupp spoke with Darby about her memories of overseeing coverage of the case.

Ryan McCartney served as editor of the 102nd volume of The Chronicle in 2006-2007, when three Duke lacrosse players falsely accused of raping an exotic dancer at a team party were exonerated. Since graduating in 2008, McCartney received a masters in political communication at Dublin City University on a Mitchell Scholarship. He currently lives in Arlington, Va., and works as an associate editor on the msnbc.com politics team at the NBC News bureau in Washington, D.C. Five years after the March 13 party, The Chronicle’s Taylor Doherty and Lindsey Rupp spoke with McCartney about his memories of overseeing coverage of the case.
