Radiohead

(10/11/07 4:00am)

This week Thom Yorke and company, the band most commonly known as Radiohead, return with their seventh studio album, In Rainbows, an industry-defying response to the creative constraints enacted by big-name labels. Commemorating the fulfillment of their record contract, the band was able to release In Rainbows completely on their own terms, meaning free from any and all studio involvement. Fortunately for us, no record companies also means no hefty price tag. The album is available for download on inrainbows.com, where each user is free to decide for himself how much to pay for the album-and Radiohead makes it clear that free is most certainly an option.

Soulja Boy

(10/04/07 4:00am)

Rapper Soulja Boy drops his highly anticipated debut album Souljaboytellem.com this week. Chances are that if you haven't been living under a rock for the past couple months, you'll already know the 17-year-old rapper as originator of the latest club craze, the Soulja Boy dance. DeAndre Way, aka Soulja Boy, created an internet phenomenon with his iconic dance, giving birth to the hoe-Supermanin' cultural force we know today. The album name references how Way got his start as Soulja Boy-first on SoundClick, an internet music networking site, and later on his own site-aptly named www.souljaboytellem.com-before he was scooped up by Interscope records.

devendra banheart

(09/27/07 4:00am)

Devendra Banhart is a unique spirit and old soul often noted for his surreal, naturalistic lyrics and idolization of Tropicália innovator Caetano Veloso. On Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon, his latest full-length release, Banhart both stays true to and expands his "freak-folk" style, classified as "New Weird America" or "Naturalismo" by some.

Animal collective

(09/20/07 4:00am)

New York City experimental rock band Animal Collective returns with Strawberry Jam, almost two years after the release of 2005's critically acclaimed Feels. A couple of solo attempts later, the quartet of Panda Bear, Avey Tare, Deakin and Geologist reconvenes to once again produce an album that strips pop of all of its conventions yet leaves just enough familiar sweetness to seduce the listening ear.

Thurston Moore

(09/20/07 4:00am)

It's been more than a decade and about a dozen Sonic Youth albums since 1995's Psychic Hearts, the first solo album from SY frontman Thurston Moore. Now, 12 years later, half of the 'first couple of rock' returns sans-Kim Gordon and with a whole different set of cohorts. His latest, Trees Outside the Academy, features Dinosaur Jr.'s legendary J. Mascis shredding on guitar while newcomer Samara Lubelski's violin playing compliments Moore's hushed vocals.

vhs or beta

(09/06/07 4:00am)

Louisville, Ky.'s VHS or Beta borrow their name from the war between the now-obsolete video formats VHS and Betamax. The retro throwback is not only present in the name, but also in the music-a dance-punk, '80s electropop fusion-. The band's third effort, Bring On the Comets, which boasts collaboration with members of My Morning Jacket, comes on the heels of a successful tour opening for legends Duran Duran. Unfortunately, the band's "street cred" doesn't do much to differentiate them from the flood of New Wave-knock-off bands plaguing the airwaves.
