'We'll be back': Duke women's track and field falls step short of repeat title in wild finish at ACC Indoor Championships

(02/27/23 3:10am)

Sophomore Megan McGinnis ran around the curve of the track just barely ahead of Miami freshman Sanaa Hebron, running at McGinnis’ hip. Anchoring Duke’s women's 4x400m relay race, she crossed the finish line in a flash. But while McGinnis crossed the finish line on time, her baton did not — and that cost Duke everything.

On Sunday afternoon, plenty is at stake for Duke: A rivalry win, a conference title and a season undefeated within Cameron Indoor Stadium all hang in the balance. With North Carolina set to visit the Blue Devils at 12 p.m. Sunday for the regular-season finale, our beat writers make their predictions.

(02/13/23 5:54pm)

When head coach Kara Lawson took a seat in front of the microphone Sunday afternoon, she wasn’t thrilled. With the exception of a single free throw from sophomore guard Shayeann Day-Wilson, Lawson’s team had just ended a game against an important ACC rival with a seven-minute scoring drought. The ninth-ranked Blue Devils struggled to find the basket in the last quarter against Miami, whereas the Hurricanes were picking up speed. The visiting team closed what had once been a 19-point deficit to a 10-point gap with aggressive defense and sharpshooting from deep.
