It felt like a high-school homecoming: Bright stadium lights on a Friday night, stands packed with parents and classmates, rowdy cheers echoing across the bleachers. A big rival school from out of town — welcome back, ACC soccer — and exciting bursts of energy from the players on the field perfected the illusion of a classic hometown showdown.

Like any dedicated academic, Riley Leonard had to face Duke-student reality while he wrapped up his high-commitment extracurricular activity Monday night. With his task for the evening neatly settled, the studious junior was reminded, while caught in a throng of celebrating classmates, that his homework was overdue.

2022 was a season of great promise with middling results for the Blue Devils. After a difficult 2021 season, expectations were high for the women’s team thanks to the addition of freshman Dalia Frias and transfer Ashlyn Ramos. Meanwhile, the men’s team added several first-years and returned many of its top seven runners, including senior Zach Kinne and graduate student Chris Theodore.

On Saturday afternoon, Duke’s season became a losing one. The Blue Devils traveled to Louisville where the Cardinals delivered them their eighth loss of the year in a tight 14-13 battle that put their season record at 7-8, which is now 7-9 after a Thursday loss against North Carolina. Given the trajectory of the last couple of months, these defeats do not come as much of a surprise. Hopes were high at the start of the season for this Blue Devil squad, whose early NCAA tournament exit last year was largely regarded as an unfortunate ending to a wildly successful season. Now, Duke is struggling to win against other ACC teams. Aside from a tight victory against Pittsburgh, it has not yet claimed a win over another conference competitor. So what is going on with the Blue Devils?
