The cross country teams posted strong performances Saturday at the 2003 NCAA Southeast Region Championship, but both teams failed to receive automatic bids to the national meet. The men's season is likely over, but the women hope to receive an at-large to the national meet in Waterloo, Iowa.
CHAPEL HILL -- The swim team went to North Carolina yesterday with the intention of working hard in preparation for the meets to come. Coming off a hard fought victory against UNC-Wilmington, the Blue Devils plan to pick their battles this season. Looking beyond to the meets in the near future, Duke was routed by UNC 195-96 in men's competition and 173-116 in women's races. Both Duke's men's and women's teams dropped to 1-2 on the season.
The men's tennis team ended its fall season in a big way this weekend, capturing its first-ever ITA National Indoor Championship on Saturday in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Tennessee quarterback Casey Clausen is the big man on the Volunteers' campus in Knoxville--particularly after leading his team to an impressive victory over Alabama last Saturday. Clausen dominated the five-overtime thriller, throwing for four touchdowns and running for a fifth as the 18th-ranked Vols snapped a two-game losing streak. His heroics earned him SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
The football team has had a tough week. Emerging from a blowout loss to Wake Forest October 18, the Blue Devils dismissed head coach Carl Franks. State Wolfpack (5-3, 2-2) in this Saturday's matchup in Wallace Wade Stadium.
