Wake Forest has never won a national championship. It hasn’t reached the Final Four since 1962. Even when Tim Duncan was an All-American for them in the late 1990’s, they never made it past the Sweet 16. The Demon Deacons have also never been ranked No. 1 in preseason polls—until this year.

Junior Sally Meyerhoff has quietly been the second-best runner on the women's cross country team all season long. Although consistently placing at the top of the leaderboard, Meyerhoff ran in the shadows of teammate Shannon Rowbury-until this weekend. Meyerhoff raced to an ACC individual title and led the No. 5 Blue Devils to their first ever ACC Championship Saturday in Maryland.

Expectations were high for the men’s cross country team as it entered the ACC Championship ranked 26th in the nation. After its disappointing last-place finish a year ago, the Blue Devils were poised to prove 2003 was a fluke.

When Duke (1-6, 0-4 in the ACC) and Wake Forest (3-4, 0-4) clash at Groves Stadium Saturday, both teams will be playing to make a statement. The Blue Devils hope to avenge last year’s 42-14 Homecoming loss, which resulted in the firing of former head coach Carl Franks. On the other side, the Demon Deacons are looking to snap a three-game losing streak during which each game was decided on the last possession.

Duke’s tandem of Jonathan Stokke and Peter Rodrigues played many doubles matches together last year and adjusted to each other’s play. The well-oiled team picked up from where it left off a year ago and placed second in the Southern Intercollegiate Tournament Monday.

The men’s tennis team kicked off its fall season over the weekend at Georgia’s Southern Intercollegiate Tournament. Although Duke’s top two players did not participate in the tournament, several veterans—juniors Stephen Amritraj, Jonathan Stokke and sophomore Peter Rodrigues—picked up wins in Division I singles competition.

The women’s cross country team breezed by the competition this weekend at the Aztec Invitational. In the Blue Devils’ first ever appearance at the 16-team San Diego, Calif., race, Duke scored 18 points, only three shy of a perfect showing.

The women’s tennis team opened its season this past weekend in Wilmington, N.C., where the Blue Devils battled their way through a rain-delayed tournament. Senior Saras Arasu and sophomore Tori Zawacki each took first place in their separate singles draws. The pair took third place as a doubles team.

The Blue Devils showcased their hard summer training in a friendly competition against local schools Wednesday. The men’s team beat competitors Wake Forest and High Point, while the women’s team placed second in the three team competition, losing to Wake Forest.

The cross country teams will kickoff their season tomorrow with a small meet on Wake Forest’s wooded course in Winston-Salem. Today is the first day the NCAA allows cross country teams to compete and the Blue Devils will take advantage of the opportunity, racing against Wake Forest and High Point in an informal meet.

The men's and women's track teams will send their very best to Philadelphia Thursday to compete in the oldest and largest track meet in America, the Penn Relays. The stands at Franklin Field will packed with over 100,000 spectators over the course of the weekend, as the Blue Devils hope to continue their long history of Penn Relay Champions dating back to the 1940s.

The men's and women's track teams have run on North Carolina's Fetzer Field almost every other weekend this spring, but this visit will not feel the same. This weekend the Blue Devils will try to hold their own as they battle some of the strongest opponents in the nation at the 2004 ACC Outdoor Championships.

Both the men's and women's track teams traveled to rival North Carolina's Fetzer Field for one last tune up before the ACC Championships. While the meet was dubbed the Carolina Fast Times, Duke excelled primarily in the field events, while the majority of their runners trained through the weekend.

The track team put together a solid collection of individual performances over the weekend as it hosted the largest ever Duke Invitational. Over 2,200 athletes from 70 colleges and 60 clubs competed at Wallace Wade Stadium, making the event one of the larger meets in the country.

The men's tennis team, making its case as one of the top teams in the country, dominated N.C. State yesterday in a re-scheduled match at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils (14-5, 4-1 in the ACC) swept the Wolfpack (5-11, 1-4) with a perfect score of 7-0 by winning eight of the nine matches on the night. Against a basement team of the ACC Duke did not falter, defending its number eight team ranking nationally.

The men's tennis team returned to its typical form Wednesday, easily handling 48th-ranked Wake Forest (8-7, 1-3 in the ACC) 6-1 in ACC match play on the road. The eighth-ranked Blue Devils improve their over all record to 12-5 and their ACC record to 2-1. Duke came off a loss to Florida State Sunday, their first regular season conference defeat in eight years.

The men's tennis team will start off it's first weekend of the 2004 regular season in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center with a full calendar. The eighth-ranked Blue Devils will host No. 41 William & Mary Thursday, No. 9 Texas A&M Saturday, and No. 49 Notre Dame in a weekend that looks to be a good early test of the team.
