The No. 8 Tigers are the trendy preseason pick to win the ACC title this season, and they will rely heavily on their explosive offense to do so. Dual-threat quarterback and early Heisman Trophy candidate Tajh Boyd presents a tricky matchup for opponents with his ability to burn defenses both on the ground and through the air. Boyd’s primary target in the Tiger aerial assault is 6-foot-1, 205-pound wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who enters his junior year looking to regain his All-American form from 2011 after an injury-plagued sophomore season. Unlike last year, though, Watkins will be the primary focus of the defensive gameplan, following the departure of standout receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the NFL.

Following last year’s romp of Georgia Tech in the ACC Championship Game, the Seminoles beat BCS cinderella Northern Illinois to win its fourth Orange Bowl in school history. Quarterback EJ Manuel was one of 20 Florida State players to depart Tallahassee for the NFL, but the Seminoles are usually well-stocked with instant-impact players to insert into holes, and this year is no different. Redshirt freshman Jameis Winston, who also plays on the Seminoles’ baseball team, will replace Manuel at quarterback after winning the starting job last week. To whom he’ll be throwing to remains a question mark, as a slew of injuries and ineligible players have turned Florida State’s receiving corps from a team strength to a possible cause for concern.

Beginning with its run to the national championship game in 2011, Duke’s defensive intensity has been at the core of the team’s success. But after losing goalkeeper Tara Campbell and defenders Erin Koballa, Maddy Haller and Libby Jandl to graduation, senior Natasha Anasi is the lone remaining member of the Blue Devils’ fearsome back line.

The Scoop: Duke’s senior captains are determined to lead a young squad back to the NCAA tournament after last season’s team came up short. A strong sophomore class has a full season under its belt, and some instant-impact freshmen have enough talent for the Blue Devils to hang with any team in the ACC.

Senior forward Mollie Pathman issued a challenge to all of Duke’s opponents last week—try to shut out the Blue Devils this season. Pathman’s confidence in Duke’s formidable front line is well-placed: senior Laura Weinberg and redshirt senior Kim DeCesare join Pathman and junior Kelly Cobb as talented, experienced playmakers that could turn a perennially stubborn defensive team into a dangerous offensive juggernaut.

OAKLAND, Calif.—At 6-foot-8 and 250 pounds, Nate Freiman has the impressive size that screams “basketball player,” which wouldn’t be a bad guess for a successful Duke athlete. But Freiman spent his four years in Durham slamming balls over fences instead of through hoops, and his baseball prowess has landed the former Blue Devil first baseman an important role with the upstart Oakland Athletics.

Looking at Duke’s weekend series with No. 7 Florida State from an MLB alumni perspective, the Seminoles would win by a landslide. Buster Posey, J.D. Drew and Deion Sanders headline a list of 63 Florida State players who have cracked major league rosters. By contrast, Duke’s most prominent baseball alumni include Dick Groat, Chris Capuano and Quinton McCracken.
