In the hopes of creating a list of Duke's top 100 books similar to that released by the Modern Library this summer, members of the Perkins reference department set up a booth at Friday's Oktoberfest and encouraged Duke students to vote for five books that they considered to be the best novels of the 20th century. Over the course of the day, 268 ballots were submitted and over 400 unique titles were mentioned.
Second City is a Chicago-based improvisational and sketch comedy troupe that has, over the years, produced such famous alumni as John Belushi, Gilda Radner, and Mike Myers. Samantha Albert is part of the touring group that will be headed to Page Auditorium next week. Recess editor Adam Winer caught Albert on the phone after she'd just finished a rehearsal.
"We're the prettiest band in rock and roll and the official band of NASCAR and the World Wrestling Federation," said Chip Robinson, frontman for the Backsliders before launching into his first set last Friday night at the Cat's Cradle. And while this pairing may seem unlikely, it was not unusual for the happening at Mammoth Record's Big Tenth anniversary party last weekend. Complete with a big top circus atmosphere, midgets and a beer-swilling clown-whose trick of making beer disappear was truly amazing-the party sold out early.
Lorraine Johnson Coleman is an author and public speaker. In the tradition of Zora Neale Hurston, her writing tells simple tales of rural African Americans, and she speaks often of the need to learn about ordinary folks and their everyday lives.
