Our funeral for the First Amendment is a demand for political liberty

(04/13/12 4:00am)

Amidst the fog of the American imperial state, one finds it increasingly difficult to think clearly. Our vision is obscured by a society of spectacle; and what has the spectacle been of late? In recent months we have watched state legislatures across the country attempting to curtail the civil liberties of same-sex couples and debating whether women ought to have full control over their reproductive health. Our senators weighed the merits of multibillion-dollar taxpayer subsidies to oil companies raking in record-breaking annual profits, while at the same time, the farcical horse-race of the GOP primaries gained an ineffable magnitude in the corporate media. The struggle for social progress in America thus finds itself in constant battle against moral systems based on prejudice and hate, caught in the mire of electoral institutions infected to the core with the rot of political patronage.
