ACC coaches praise league's strength in weekly teleconference

When the Syracuse Orangemen trashed Wisconsin 34-0 on college football's opening weekend, all signs pointed to a long and difficult road for the rest of their 1997 opponents. After all, this was a team boasting Heisman hopeful quarterback Donovan McNabb, as well as a defense that held highly-touted running back Ron Dayne to just 46 yards on 13 carries.

The NHL playoffs are underway, and aside from a few controversies concerning video replays on goals scored with players in the crease, the race for the Stanley Cup is off to an exciting start. Even with games on ESPN, ESPN2 and CBC, there's still some time left over to look back on the regular season and hand out some awards. Let's start with the "official" awards:

There are a number of compelling subplots in this year's race for the Stanley Cup. In Pittsburgh, it's the swan song for Mario Lemieux. In New York, Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier are dealing with an unfamiliar situation-for once, no one expects them to win. In Colorado, the Avalanche are gearing up to attempt a repeat, while the Detroit Red Wings are trying to avoid another postseason disappointment.

Having logged countless miles on the Acura Legend (a.k.a Nick's Moneymaker) covering women's hoops games while visiting various hotbeds of ACC women's basketball, we feel that not only should we be given seats on the Duke bench during games, but furthermore, we should be the sole panelists in determining the post-season awards in the ACC.

Just when you thought the long and winding Road to the Final Four that starts with CBS' first college basketball telecast of the year would never reach its destination, the end is finally in sight. I'm talking about the NCAA Tournament, otherwise known as March Madness, the Big Dance and various other cliches that you've been hearing Dick Vitale fire at you since early in the season. It's a fun time for hoops junkies-the first few rounds are kind of like a basketball IV, with games continually being pumped into your system. One of the best things about the tournament is its unpredictable nature, as there's always sure to be surprising upsets, last-second buzzer-beaters and late pizza delivery men. As spring approaches, the painful memories of a winless season are fading for the coaches and players of Duke's football team. Thoughts have turned to improvement for the 1997 season, and to that end coach Fred Goldsmith announced that 17 players have signed National Letters of Intent to become part of Goldsmith's fourth recruiting class.
