FINAL: Duke 81, Cal Poly Pomona 60
With three starters returning and the No. 1 recruiting class in the country ready to make big contributions, head coach Joanne P. McCallie's squad was tabbed preseason conference favorite by an overwhelming margin—earning 24 of 33 first-place votes— ahead of second place North Carolina and third place Florida State.
FINAL -- Maryland 21, Duke 16: Duke is now 1-4, but the Blue Devils should walk out of Byrd Stadium with their heads held high after nearly completing an impressive comeback in a very hostile environment. While you can point at a number of things in attributing the loss (touchdown drives that were relegated to field goal drives, careless interceptions or missed tackles), Duke did come out and dictate play for nearly the entire first half, and just came up short in the end. Nevertheless, Blue Devil fans have to be disappointed, as the loss tonight means that preseason hopes of qualifying for a bowl game are all but completely dashed. From College Park, Md., it's Maryland 21, Duke 16.
With just a few days remaining before their visit to Wallace Wade, the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide returned to the practice fields Tuesday in full pads. After thorough demolitions of San Jose State and then-No. 18 Penn State at home, the trip to Durham marks Alabama's first road game of the year, and according to head coach Nick Saban, a true test of focus.

On behalf of the Duke Undergraduate Research Society, we were extremely pleased to read the editorial “Take advantage of undergrad research” in the Oct. 22 issue of The Chronicle. Both the University and its faculty members deserve high praise for their positive contributions toward promoting undergraduate research at Duke. The University has successfully coordinated a wide variety of programs and efforts to make research more easily accessible to undergraduates in both the natural and social sciences and humanities. The success of these research programs and undergraduate independent study projects is made possible by the many faculty members, postdoctoral researchers and graduate students willing to dedicate their time and effort toward mentoring undergraduates in their fields of study and stimulating our intellectual curiosity.
